The inflatable clown used by Kevin to impersonate his father in order to frighten Hector is a nod to Pennywise the Clown, a form of the titular antagonist of the Stephen King novel, It. The character was previously played by Curry in the 1990 TV miniseries adoption of the novel. Mr. Hector is never addressed by his name, nor is he credited as such, with his name appearing only on his nametag. He was played by actor Tim Curry who is best known for his portrayals such as Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, etc.
In October 2020, Tim Curry reprised his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in a live table reading of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in support of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin to raise funds for Joe Biden's presidential campaign. This has shifted his work mostly to voice acting, although he has continued to perform as a singer and make appearances at fan conventions.
